Former NFL player charged in domestic violence case

Almost everyone gets into a disagreement with their significant other at some point in their relationship. In most instances, these disputes remain verbal in nature and are nothing more than mere arguments that are quickly resolved. Other times, though, these spats turn physical. When this happens, individuals can wind up injured which, in turn, can lead to police involvement. Depending on the story that is told to the police, a person involved in the domestic dispute could wind up facing criminal charges.

According to recent reports, a former player for the Tennessee Titans is in this position now after being accused of physically assaulting his girlfriend. According to reports, Derrick Mason grabbed his girlfriend's neck and struck her in the stomach after she told him that their relationship was over. The woman also claimed that Mason slapped her. The incident allegedly left the woman with visible injuries. Mason was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault involving strangulation, which is a felony, as well as vandalism, since he allegedly punched a hole through a door at the girlfriend's residence.

While Mason awaits his day in court, he will need to decide how best to approach his criminal defense. In these types of cases, there may be many options. First, he may be able to claim that the injuries caused to the woman were from him acting defensively to her aggression. Second, he may be able to claim that he did not strike the woman at all. His third option may be to negotiate with prosecutors in hopes of obtaining lesser charges with less severe penalties.

Regardless of the approach choose, a defendant will likely need to have a strong criminal defense attorney by his or her side. A competent legal professional will be able to advise the accused about how best to utilize the law and the rules of evidence to his advantage. Hopefully, with a strong legal advocate a defendant can protect his or her legal rights and future as much as is possible under the circumstances.
