Two face drunk driving charges in separate, but linked, crashes

Tennesseans who are confronted with drunk driving charges will have a lot to think about as they begin to plan for a defense. Since being charged with drunk driving carries with it penalties like fines, the loss of driving privileges and even a jail sentence, it is imperative to have a sound defense to try and avoid the worst-case scenario. While being charged with driving under the influence is serious, it does not automatically mean the person is guilty. Knowing how to combat these charges is essential for the future.

A law enforcement officer was injured when his police cruiser was hit by another car. The circumstances of this incident are unusual because it involves two separate people who have been charged with drunk driving. The officer was in the middle of investigating an alleged drunk driver had crashed. This happened at approximately 11 p.m.

His cruiser blocked the road as he investigated a vehicle that hit a utility pole. As this was happening, an SUV hit the cruiser with the officer in it. It was found that the driver of the SUV was also believed to have been under the influence. The officer was hospitalized with injuries that were said to be minor. Both the driver who hit the pole and the driver who hit the cruiser were arrested for DUI.

This is a complicated case as there are two different drivers who were arrested for separate incidents at one time. With cases such as these in which multiple offenses are likely to be alleged and there was an injury to a law enforcement officer, it becomes even more important that those involved protect themselves. It is unfortunate that a law enforcement officer was injured, but that does denote driver guilt. There could have been a justifiable reason for the drivers to have appeared under the influence. The testing procedures could have been flawed. Or it might be that protocol was not followed for the arrests. Since the penalties for a conviction on drunk driving charges can be harsh, it is imperative for those who were arrested to seek counsel from an experienced attorney as soon as possible.
